Reach Across the Stars is an educational app developed by the Smithsonian Institution for iPhone users. This free app takes users on journeys into the work environments of current scientists, allowing them to learn about their favorite career moments, as well as the challenges and obstacles they have faced. The app features a variety of stories that combine audio interviews, videos, 3D environments, and 360-degree virtual reality content, providing viewers with a unique and immersive experience.

One of the highlights of Reach Across the Stars is the opportunity to explore the lives of notable women in science. Users can delve into the worlds of computer scientist Grace Hopper, astronomer Nancy Roman, mathematician Katherine Johnson, physicist and chemist Marie Curie, and astronauts Mae Jemison and Sally Ride. These stories offer valuable insights into the contributions these women have made to their respective fields and serve as inspiration for future generations.

The app was developed with support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, Because of Her Story, which aims to research, collect, document, display, and share the compelling stories of women. Additionally, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, one of NASA’s “Great Observatories,” has provided support for the project. The Chandra X-ray Observatory's science and operations center is located at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Massachusetts, further solidifying the app's connection to the Smithsonian.
